Adult Sacraments

Marriage

If you are engaged, CONGRATULATIONS!  What an exciting time for you! Because Christian marriage is a sacrament, St. Joan of Arc Church wants you to be well-prepared. We offer marriage preparation to help you develop a better understanding of the sacrament; to evaluate and deepen your readiness to live married life, and to gain insights into yourselves as individuals and as a couple.

Contact and discussion about marriage needs to take place a year in advance of the planned ceremony, along with marriage preparation sessions.

Annointing of the Sick

When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.

Anyone suffering a chronic physical or mental illness, having surgery or medical procedure or suffering from aging may receive the sacrament of anointing of the sick.

Anyone reaching end of life is encouraged to receive Viaticum or Last Rites. This rite may include anointing, reconciliation, and eucharist.

Please contact the office to make arrangements for these pastoral visits 330-626-3424

Holy Orders

Like Marriage, the Sacrament of Orders is sometimes called a “Sacrament of Commitment.”

A Sacrament is a visible sign of God’s presence, God’s activity in our lives, in the Church and in our world. But it goes beyond that! Sacraments not only show us what God is like and what God dreams for us; Sacraments also make that happen!

In today’s Church, there are actually three degrees of “orders.” These are:

  1. Diaconate (the Order of Deacons). Deacons may be either Permanent (ordained to service as a deacon for life) or Transitional (ordained to service as a deacon as a step on the path to priesthood).
  2. Presebyterate (the Order of Priests)
  3. Episcopate (the Order of Bishops)

If you are interested in pursuing any type of these vocations, please contact Fr. Francis at fkatrinak@youngstowndiocese.org or

OCIA -

Order of Christian Initiation for Adults

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, (OCIA) is the process by which the Church continues to bring new life and new members into the body of Christ. Retrieved from the models of initiation from the early days of the Christian faith, the OCIA is designed for adults, who after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, curiously and freely seek the living God, and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their heart.

The initiation process is a gradual one, where a participant journeys toward the sacraments with a group of community members as companions. Beyond bringing people from other faith traditions into the community, the ultimate goal of OCIA is to initiate a curiosity that will lead to a lifelong journey of seeking the truth and peace of Christ.
